How soon is too soon to have the talk about being exclusive?

- Red from Kansas City, MO

Anything under 1 month is a little too soon.  Even 2 months and you’re still cutting it close.  That is unless you have known this person since you were pushing each other on the playground or even in diapers.  The way I see it, is if you have never met any of their close friends, gone on at least 4 solid dates, made out, maybe even had sex, and talked about favorites: colors, sports, music, etc. then you have absolutely no grounds to be asking for an exclusive relationship.  My general wait time is at least 3 months.  The way I see it is that in 3 months, you get to know them, find out where they work, meet the friends, see what their habits are like, find out secrets, and even have that chance to pull their public records from a local court house.  And yes, I’ve had people attempt to do that with me, but the way I see it: if you’ve got nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about.  And that is usually my clearance for an exclusive relationship.

Or, you know. . . you could just tell them you love them and consider yourself exclusive and live in a world of delusion and socially unacceptable behaviors.  But be sure to start collecting her hair now if you wanna make that doll and tell people you own her rights to being exclusive with you.
